Serra de Tramuntana: rocks, wind and sea

power of love, winter on Majorca, archduke Ludwig Salvator
water for the regulated surplus, giving and taking in the mountains!

Serra de Tramuntana is an up to 15 kilometres broad mountain range with 10 peaks over 1.000 metre height, which runs parallel to the northwest coast. The mountains reach over 80 kilometer length from the region Ponent municipality Andratx in the southwest up to Cap Formentor in the north. The highest point, which is almost in the middle of the mountain range, is the Puig Major with 1.443 metres, where is also snowfall in the wintertime. At the northwestern slope of the mountains are the steep and rocky coastal areas with small bays and rocky beaches. The Port de Soller was created in the only large bay. The Serra de Tramuntana was named after the cold north and west winds Tramuntana. They form climatical a meteorological divide to the inland, which therefore has milder winters, but also generally more dry days without rain. The orographical rainfall provides in the mountains more frequent and strong rainfalls than in other regions of the island. At the side hills of the mountains with its torrents are fertile valleys, where in the area around Soller grow orange and lemon trees. On terraces are tomatoes, beans and grapes, cultivated in Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Deia and Valldemossa. The region Serra de Tramuntana is except for Soller and Pollenca sparsely settled.
